Hastings variable rosters protected for now

The Australian Industrial Relations Commission has today issued an interim order that variable rosters at Hastings police station remain unaltered until 12 December this year.

Yesterday, an application from The Police Association was heard in the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) over several attempts from the Force to terminate variable roster arrangements in Hastings. A variable roster arrangement includes 12-hour rosters.

Today, the AIRC ordered that the Force cannot take any further steps to terminate or alter the current variable hours of work at Hastings police station for now.

This order will remain in place until 12 December 2008, when further hearings relating to the matter will take place.

As part of the industrial agreement, the Victoria Police Force may only terminate variable roster arrangements under the following conditions:

  • there is a mutual agreement between the workplace manager and employees;
  • there are health and safety issues;
  • the variable roster fails to meet service delivery requirements;
  • the variable roster fails to meet the objectives of the business case or proposal; or
  • there is a change in station profile.

Members are reminded to contact the Association immediately for assistance should your local management threaten to terminate your roster against your will.
