SOS Update

Since the launch of the SOS- Save Our Streets campaign in June this year, police resources have been the top priority for The Police Association.

The Association has positioned itself at the fore of discussions about community safety.

With the production of our White Paper on Police Resources - including extensive research by the National Institute of Economic and Industry Research on Victorian police numbers - The Police Association has ensured that the interests of our members are duly represented in public debate.

Recently, the SOS campaign has focused on the impact that resource shortages have on member health and safety. We have also launched the SOS petition that, with your help, will achieve over 70,000 signatures in support of increased police numbers.

During the next step of the SOS campaign, The Police Association will renew its focus on finding solutions to the police resourcing problem.

We will continue to take members’ concerns about resources to the Force (we have commenced constructive discussions with senior management) and will also look at examining successful interstate and overseas police resourcing models in more detail.

The Police Association wants to ensure that the community safety debate is central to the thinking of candidates in the forthcoming Melbourne mayoral elections.

To this end, The Police Association will next month facilitate the CBD Safety Forum, during which, all Melbourne City Council Lord Mayoral candidates will be invited to discuss solutions to late night violence, anti-social behaviour and general community safety in the CBD.

The forum will be held at 6:30pm, Monday 10 November at Dallas Brooks Hall.

The Police Association looks forward to hosting this public discussion at the upcoming forum, as well as continuing our efforts to drive the message of our SOS campaign right up to the 2010 state election.
